I am writing this in the capacity of a child NSB participant, the 2004 Senior National Spelling Bee champion, coach of three NSB contestants who finished (in a tie for)3rd, 5th and 8th in the nation three of the past four years, and as university faculty who teaches Spanish and Portuguese: While this guide is an amazing accomplishment for its 16-year-old author and it contains many fun and useful facts and features for those preparing for high-level spelling competitions, this book is also fraught with problems. In his observations about German, all of the Romance languages, Latin and Greek, Remer makes many errors along with other spelling patterns that are correctly identified. He attempts to make observations about "minor" languages, for which there are not sufficient examples to generalize. He includes words from languages that have never and will probably never bee used in the NSB, such as Avestan (heard of it, anyone?) and Icelandic. The book also suffers from overkill, e.g. the hundreds of French examples --among many others--- thrown together in too few categories. In his effort to reach 10,000 words, the author resorts to including words that have two spellings or more (such as cacciatore, cinquedea and gremolata, pp. 69-69), strictly prohibited from use in the NSB. Finally, this work includes words that seem too strange and difficult (polyphloesboean [with two alternate spellings, no less] and Tehuantepecer) for even the final rounds of the NSB. This book is almost guaranteed to overwhelm almost any speller except for those who have competed in and placed high in previous NSBs. Though Scott Remer's product includes many helpful sections and details (it taught me how to do an advanced search in Merriam-Webster's [unabridged desktop] Dictionary, it takes spellers on a scary and bumpy ride, alternately steering them wrong and leaving them exhausted.
This is an excellent resource, particularly in comparison with the few other items available that might be used in preparation for national spelling competition. It is doubly impressive when one considers the relative youth of the author. Very high production quality and intended for those who take spelling and word connoisseurship seriously. Highly recommended and worth every penny.
I finished tied 27th in the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee and used this book to prepare for the Bee. It is very well thought out and structured, and it contains words from many esoteric languages. The observations and spelling rules for each language are great! I am using this book as a foundation to prepare for the 2012 National Spelling Bee.
